Registrations are now open for the sixth annual Wellness Walk in Sydney which aims to bridge the gap between stigma and understanding of mental health.
The event is comprised of two different distances; a 2km mini-walk around the Royal Botanic Gardens and a 5.9km walk over Sydney Harbour Bridge and back. Both walks start and finish in the beautiful grounds of Government House, Sydney.
The Wellness Walk is an awareness raising exercise for Mental Health Month and also operates as a fundraiser to support essential services for people living with mental illness.
After the walk, participants are invited to enjoy post-event entertainment from Elly-May Barnes and James Van Cooper. Stay and celebrate your walk with prizes, face painting, live music and a sausage sizzle.
The Wellness Walk is the creation of Larry Smith. Larry started up the Wellness Walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge after going to New York and participating in the NAMI Walks over the Brooklyn Bridge in support of mental health and fighting stigma. The NAMI Walk now takes place in more than 80 locations across the USA.
This year more than 50,000 people in more than 85 communities across the USA will walk in support of mental health. The NAMI Walk has grown exponentially, ours is just beginning.
The Wellness Walk is hosted by One Door Mental Health, a not-for-profit mental health service provider for those living with mental illness, their families and carers.
