What is the event?
Last October for Mental Health month Minister Greg Hunt supported the Mind Blank team in honouring Veteran Michael Ward in walking 720 kilometres from Adelaide to Melbourne. This fund raising attempt was hugely successful as $59,000 was received and more importantly, it raised awareness around youth suicide as the campaign gained over 17 thousand page visits.
Mr Ward walked because he lost his brother age 21. Who took his life when serving in the Royal Marines. In 2018 the Mind Blank team are commemorating Wardy’s efforts by hosting our own charity walk.
This year Mind Blank team decided to share our own story along the walk. The walking trail will commence in Penrith where their Sydney office is located. In 30 days, we aim to host 6 community mental health education forums in the following towns in which we have a history to share: Wollongong, Nowra, Mossvale, Goulburn, Canberra and Bega.
What is the Mind Blank story?
Our Founder and CEO of the organisation will be sharing her personal story to help explain our motivation in backing the cause “My first memory of mental health in the family was from the age of 6, when I became a carer for my mother who has been suicidal several times in her life… I myself am a survivor of PTSD so I know what it’s like to stumble through the system.”
In all of the towns outlined above. Mind Blank has a story. We have local community support and active teams who will be helping to raise awareness for the cause.
Our aim during Mental Health Month 2018 will be to gain as much media and social-media exposure as possible to support the community walkers and to help spread the message to the wider community.
